At Paradigm Treatment Centers we offer a series of Educational Support programs, designed to support the overall health and well-being of the entire family. We strongly believe that family treatment and involvement is instrumental to successful teen treatment and that the more we can support, educate, and equip parents and family members throughout this time, the more supported teens will be as a result. This is true both throughout the teen treatment process and once teens return home. We also recognize that parents and family members often experience considerable stress and challenges preceding and throughout the teen treatment process and we want to respect and support their own healthy processing and healing. One of the programs we offer to this end is our Teen Family Dynamics and Education program, which is designed to provide family members with knowledge and practical skills which contribute to the healing and growth not just of teens but of the entire family.
Within our Teen Family Dynamics and Education program, we work with teens and family members to address how specific unhealthy dynamics can be created and then repeated, resulting in consistent tension and struggle in the family relationships. It’s worth noting that much of the time, these dynamics are unconscious, and while family members may not be aware of the negative cycles at play, they nonetheless experience the negative effects. Some of these dynamics may have existed long before the teen’s current struggles and others may have developed more recently, perhaps during whatever events preempted entering treatment. Regardless of how long the dynamics have existed, it’s important for teens and family members to communicate about what their own experiences are, including how the current treatment is affecting them. While these conversations may be difficult at first, they are incredibly powerful in laying the foundation for deep healing and growth to take place in these relationships.
One of the benefits of our Teen Family Dynamics and Education is we find that it makes the individual and group family therapy sessions even more valuable. While the teens in treatment with us have individual therapy sessions every day, in addition to numerous other therapeutic groups and activities, for some family members, this is the first time they’re experiencing therapy. Families tend to enjoy and gain a lot from the sessions, but they can bring up a lot of questions and sometimes it takes time to understand the process. By providing this sessions for family members before their own individual family sessions, they have an opportunity to ask questions and learn about the process, before engaging in it themselves. We find that this helps allow family members to prepare themselves to engage openly and deeply in the process, which benefits everyone involved. It’s also worth noting that our Family Dynamics and Education program is coordinated with teen’s individual therapy goals, as well as the other family sessions that take place. In this way, the goal of Paradigm Treatment Centers approach is to provide holistic and thorough care to teens and their families, in order to support growth and healing for everyone.
